This is getting into some serious technical stuff here, but the ideal dynamic loft for spin is 52 degrees. Other than that, I basically hit all my chips, pitches, and other shots inside 100 yards with my 54 degree. I actually only use my 58 from greenside bunkers or if I need to hit an absolute beast of a flop shot (which is extremely rare). Right now, I'm doing my PW/50/54/58 and I like that a lot as a wedge setup.Īlso, just so you know this, not everyone chips with their highest lofted club. I just open the face up a tiny bit more and hit the shot. There's just so few times where you have a shot that requires that kind of loft anyway that I can't imagine sitting there thinking "Man, if only I had 2 more degrees of loft for this shot, THEN I could pull it off!". Personally, as someone who has used both a 60 and 58 degree wedge as part of my set, I prefer having a 58 which also lets me bring the next wedge down a bit to fill the gap better between my gap wedge and the 58. Presuming your Wedge is around 43 degrees again (43-44 are the most common) and your gap is around 47-48, that does leave a pretty big gap to your 56. I'm personally a big fan of having the gap be part of your main iron set and plan to also do that when I upgrade in the next month or two here. This kind of depends on whether the Wilsons will be upgraded at any point soon, partially because there's more of a range of standard lofts than exact numbers when it comes to different iron sets. If I move to a 58-degree Lob, should I just split the difference and get a 52-degree club? Or am I looking at this wrong? I don't really want to give up my Gap, so that's a 47-degree. So, having said all that - I'm a bit confused about what clubs would best fit me. I was reading online and most sources say that 60-degree Lobs are usually reserved for scratch golfers and that a 58-degree Lob is a bit more forgiving. I almost always use the Lob out of green side bunkers and anytime I'm within 60 yards of the green. My Sand is about 90, and my Lob is a maximum of 65. With my swing improvements, it's now 115-120. The Gap is my most consistent club, and it used to be 100 yards exactly. ![]() My Sand Wedge is 56 degrees, and my Lob Wedge is 60.īefore I improved my swing, I didn't really notice the gap between my Gap & Sand. I then filled in my set with an existing Sand Wedge and Lob Wedge, both of which came with a previous starter set (Affinity).Īnyway, as my game has improved, I started thinking about my wedges and short game, and I'm wondering if it's time to get something different.įrom what I can find online, my Wilson Staff Pitching Wedge is 43 degrees, and the Gap Wedge is 47 degrees. However, the set ended with a PW, plus one additional club of my choosing I picked the Gap Wedge. I'm in two leagues, my 9-hole handicap is 8 in one and 9 in the other.Ī few years ago, I bought a new set of irons (Wilson Staff Defy) and I really like them. I'm still not good, but much better than I was. Over the last 2-3 years, my golf game has improved dramatically.
